In video games however that is rarely the case, as hybrids or jack of all trade type characters/job/etc often are far outstripped by ones that focus on one role. Realistically while specialists are awesome practically speaking a 'jack of all trades' is often a much better option. I always though tit was fascinating how "Jack of all trades, master of none." turned into a negative phrase given that the full quote was "Jack of all trades, master of none, though oftentimes better than master of one" Perhaps work in some rhetoric about how red magic is fueled by your blood being spilled in defense of your allies, or some such. When a Red Mage has enough stacks, they could then use a skill to switch to casting mode ("Wizard Stance", maybe? Switch STR and INT?), and blow through their Chainspell stacks with like 6 swiftcasted damage and healing spells (swiftcasted Stoneskin on self?) then go right back to swording. Then, give them passive skills that give them stacks of a "Chainspell" buff when they take damage and dodge. Use Spellblade skills as melee, with moves like Osmotic Slash and Drain Slash to restore resources, Thunder Blade as a DOT, Flame Blade for aggro, and other such skills. Give them CNJ and THM cross-class, as well as gravity magic.

Take damage? Chance of action point gain! Get a status ailment? Action point! Dodge an attack? Action point! Drop below a certain threshold of health? Action point! In Bravely Default, they retooled Doublecasting into a slew of passive skills that granted them more action points when they got targeted by attacks. In Dimensions, Spellblading was folded into the Red Mage skillset, which makes sense because it's a blend of magic and swordplay.

I still want Red Mage to be a Tank class.Ĭombine the interpretations of Dimensions and Bravely Default.
